As someone who tends to stick with dark/muted tones, I rely on accessories/different fabrics to add a little extra something to my look, without taking my minimal vibes away.
Here I have 9 tips and tricks on making a statement with your attire, so that you can solve any plain outfit frustration, quickly and simply.
TIP 1 – WEAR A WATCH
I touched on this in my post on my style essentials – my go-to watch is either my black & rose gold Daniel Wellington Sheffield watch or my black Cluse Minuit Mesh watch. Both very simple and definitely give off minimalist vibes, which is very much on trend right now. Watches allow you to stay on track of the time, but also add a little extra to your look.
TIP 2 – WEAR EARRINGS
If you have your ears pierced, wearing earrings can really add an essence of elegance to your look. Hoop earrings seem to have made their way back into fashion, so try a pair of hoops and see how they spice up your look.
TIP 3 – BELT IT UP
Belts are a great way to break up an outfit, if it is too ”blocky” and a bit too fluid with the colour (all black / all grey etc). Adding a belt to a pair of jeans, a denim skirt or even a dress can completely switch up your look and can make an old outfit look brand-new, at the buckle of a belt.
TIP 4 – WEAR YOUR BAG
I am a strong believer in wearing a bag. It is a part of your outfit, as well as it being a necessity in most peoples’ day to day lives. There are tons of different styles of bags, such as the cross-body bag (my personal fave, due to the comfort), to the tote bag, the clutch, the bucket bag and the list goes on. Find your style of bag and make sure it is a colour that fits in with the rest of your wardrobe colour palette.
TIP 5 – DAINTY JEWELERY
I’m a huge fan of dainty jewelery, such as bracelets and little necklaces. In my opinion, less is definitely more when it comes to jewelery. Adding a necklace to an outfit adds another dimension to the look. Granted, not a very obvious dimension – but sometimes, the best things in life aren’t visible at first glance.
TIP 6 – USE YOUR SOLE
Shoes are a fantastic way to really make a statement and can take an outfit from 0 to 100, real quick. There are endless ways that you can make a statement with your shoes, whether that be trainers, kitten heels, mules or knee-high boots. There are no rules when it comes to fashion. Making a statement with your shoes can be through the texture/colour/height of the shoe. Get creative and have fun with it!
TIP 7 – TEXTURE AND DETAILS
Texture/details on clothes create different dimensions within your outfit. For example, when I wear an all black outfit (which happens to be most days), I tend to include 2 to 3 different textures within the outfit, such as denim/cotton/polyester. You can use whichever textures take your fancy – during the colder months, I tend to gravitate towards faux fur and wool, but as it gets a little warmer, the fabrics get a little lighter. You can also wear lace, silk, satin and velvet to add a different kind of texture. Ruffles have taken up the market massively recently and so this is a nice way to add a slight quirk to your attire.
TIP 7 – ITS ON THE OUTSIDE
Sometimes, a coat can be the make or break of an outfit. There are lots of different styles to choose from, your body shape and style could dictate which styles may suit you better, which I can talk about on another blog post (let me know if you’d be interested on reading it.). Wearing a coat with a good structure, a nice texture and one that is tailored well (either oversized or perfectly to fit your body), can really make a huge difference.
TIP 8 – HAT HAIR
I love wearing my cap to the gym or if I need to head to the shop and want to avoid eye contact with everyone. During the summer, when the wind is a little less aggressive, I like to wear my fedora as it gives off classy beach vibes, whilst allowing you to make a basic outfit look a bit less basic.
TIP 9 – SILHOUETTE
The silhouette of an outfit is created by the shapes of what you’re wearing. An aesthetically pleasing outfit can have many different silhouettes, however I personally like the relaxed silhouette which is created by wearing loose-fitting clothing, made from light-weight, thin material that almost drapes off of your body, allowing you to see your body shape, without seeing your body. I also enjoy wearing bulky materials in an oversized fashion to give a low-key chill vibe.
I hope you found these tips useful – be sure to leave a comment with any of your favourite ways to make a statement with your outfit, I’d love to know!
